Positive COVID-19 Test Result: Protocols for Employees

If you are a Rensselaer employee and you test positive for COVID-19, please follow the below protocols:

1. Isolate — Isolate at home for a full 5 days. Day 1 is the first full day after the day of your positive test. If you are nearly asymptomatic and have gone at least 24 hours without a fever after Day 5, you may emerge from isolation as long as you wear a high-quality (N95 or KN95) mask indoors. You should wear a N95 or KN95 mask for Days 6 to 10 whenever you are out of your personal space. If you remain symptomatic, you may emerge from isolation after Day 10 if your symptoms have improved and you have not had a fever for 24 hours. For additional information, please see the isolation guidance from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

2. Notify the Division of Human Resources — If you tested positive via a PCR test at Rensselaer, the Student Health Center will notify the Division of Human Resources of your result. If you test positive at home or externally, please notify the Division of Human Resources by contacting Lou Padula by phone at (518) 276-6164 or by email at padull@rpi.edu. The Division of Human Resources will also notify your supervisor (you are welcome to notify them as well). If you cannot work from home, you will not be required to use PTO, but can rather add 8 hours of OTH time to your time sheet for each day you cannot work.

3. Notify Close Contacts — Please notify all of your close contacts as soon as you can to help reduce the transmission of COVID-19.

4. Recover — Please report your COVID-19 test result to your primary care provider and consult with them for guidance on treatment.

5. Return to Work — You do not need to retest to leave isolation. You may return to campus as specified by the Division of Human Resources when you report your positive test result. If you return to campus before Day 11, you should wear a N95 or KN95 mask.
